IFE Science and Technology Accelerated Research for Fusion Innovation and Reactor Engineering (STARFIRE)
The STARFIRE Hub, located at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), one of the premier Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories and the home of the National Ignition Facility (NIF), is a transformative initiative aimed at accelerating inertial fusion energy (IFE) science and technology. This collaborative effort brings together a multi-institutional team to enhance high-gain target designs, diode-pumped solid-state laser technologies, and innovative manufacturing techniques. The achievement of ignition at NIF provides a strong foundation for this ambitious work. The STARFIRE Hub will focus on cutting-edge research while prioritizing workforce development through partnerships with leading universities. This initiative represents a significant step in revitalizing the U.S. IFE program and solidifying national leadership in fusion energy technology. By fostering collaboration among multiple universities, national labs, and private sector entities, the STARFIRE Hub aims to address key science and technology gaps, ultimately paving the way for practical applications of fusion energy.
